My old Dyson died. Building a new house, so I thought 'new house, new vacuum' I'll buy a cheap vac in between and one which could be used on a building site and it would not matter too much if it got trashed! This was 1/2 price at a well-known High Street catalogue store. I must admit I'm a bit of a Dyson snob and didn't expect this to compare. However, I am very impressed. The suction is amazing - 380 air watts so much so that sometimes on carpet you can't push the vacuum head across the room (see below for altering the suction).A large dust capacity of 4 litres and a long cord of 8m. It isn't noisy and is easy to move around and is light enough at 5.9kg. I especially like the upholstery tool which looks like a paddle (about 8cm across) and covers a lot of fabric/cushions at once. There are similarities in design with my Mum's new Dyson in the way the tools fit on the extension tube and the way the dust compartment is emptied but the Vax dustbox is much easier to remove and replace - you click a button to release and sit it back on the housing to replace. There's always a lot of lining up and jiggling to get my Mum's dustbox back in place and sitting correctly.I really like the chrome (metal) extension tube which Dyson used to have but have now replaced with plastic.My only criticism is that Vax have gone a bit overboard in the tools they have provided and 2 hoses - one is a stretch hose for stairs but some people like all the extras (even if they hardly ever use them - most of mine will stay in the box).In addition to the slider on the tube, which allows you to back off the suction, there is also a dial on the machine where you can turn down the power. This initially felt like over kill but then it is useful if you are vacuuming light weight cotton rugs etc where the slider is not enough to prevent the vacuum sucking up anything which isn't nailed down. Also saves you electricity.Overall, I'm thrilled with this and it is about a third of the price of that other well-known brand.
